Having finished the labor of moving and stacking this winter’s firewood, I began exploring the back country….or 16 acres of it anyway…I wanted to cruise the woodlot and see what I could cut for next years warmth.  Managing the lot is first priority as I hope to need firewood for a few more years.  My primary heat is a wood-stove located in the basement and I also have a wood burning cook-stove to feed.  I put up two and half cord and will see what happens.

Moving to the mountain has afforded the luxury of solitude.  It has also benefited me in that I can now say that the world ends at the nearest road.  My mountain, my exile and my world.  I rarely listen to the news media’s biased reporting and now pay little attention to the growing divided this country is experiencing.  Alt. right, alt left, antifa, ineffectual governments, dirty politicians, violence, racism, hatred and all those other problems do not exist here.

One may wonder if I care and I will tell you that for the most part….No.  I do not care. Not as much anymore.

I will explain why.  I grew up believing in this country.  I do still believe in it’s ideals though many of those have fallen by the wayside.   I served my country during the Vietnam war and my thanks was to be spit on.  No big deal but I remember the atmosphere of dislike for those in the military.  It is something I will always remember.  I served my community as a member of town government for numerous years and I have served society in general as a Substance Abuse Counselor in a prison system until I retired and as a foster-parent to many children.

I decided that it is time to serve me.  To allow me to live out the remaining years doing what I want.  Taking care of me and eliminating the unrelenting bullshit that the world has created for itself.  Selfish? Yes…maybe….Apathetic?…Not so much…

I truly hope the world finds peace and good will but my faith in humanity is about zero.  We have developed mind boggling technologies, medical breakthroughs and hundreds of scientific discoveries but in the areas of enlightenment, spirituality, empathy and emotional intelligence we have yet to leave the cave.  Intolerance of everything we don’t agree with is the norm and I have chosen to look out at this  world and say “Fuck you, I’m outta here”, until people come to their senses…

Sometimes, the roads of life meanders from one erratic episode to another without any apparent direction, taking us into unknown territories and sometimes leading us to places we thought we would never reach and to some destinations we never thought existed. And sometimes, our best laid plans are beset with unexpected roadblocks or unexpected benefits. We can sit and wonder how we ever had the good fortune to reach some of these places and as well, wonder how we even survived others. There are those who will explain that God has directed us to where we are, yet others will argue that Karma is the answer. God, Karma, fate or destiny. All try to explain our journey and the sequences that have influenced our reality.

Life as a disciplinarian can be harsh but if one listens and learns, it can also be an extraordinary benefactor, giving wisdom to those who seek knowledge, understanding and humbleness. Of these lessons and gifts, once learned and accepted, are carried with us until our passing. It is not the money we earn nor is it our status in life that sustains our existence from beyond. It is those gifts we have been given that we have shared with others that will sustain our spirit. Our success, power, reputation and our possessions will be forgotten or passed on to others with little understanding of what these item meant to us. It will only be our words and deeds that has effected a positive difference in the lives of others that will be our only legacy. That we will be remembered by those whom we have connected and that we have lived a good life.

When I am gone, it is not important of who I was nor the color of my skin. It will not be to whom I prayed to, for how many toys I owned or what my political preferences were.  It will be my words to others and it will be my deeds that have touch others in ways that assisted them in learning how to share their gifts with those who enter their lives. It will be that I have fought a good fight and that I have succeeded to return those gifts that were given to me.

My world centers on today. For today is life itself and in its brief existence we find our gifts: The awe-inspiring beauty of nature, the gratification of our growth and the essential connection to the universe. Living for today does not negate the essence of dreams nor does it reduce the necessity of dreaming.

“Don’t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding. Find out what you already know and you will see the way to fly.”

Jonathan Livingston Seagull

Classified under Ramblings:  I am now at a stage in my life of deciding whether or not to eliminate my incessant reading of the over abundant dispatches that fill the bulk of today’s media reports.  For myself, the constant fixation of narratives about the death and destruction of human beings, cultures, religions, environments and governments, along with the idiotic decisions and infighting of world leaders has become a wound in the spiritual atmosphere of life.  Darwin may have been correct in his theory of evolution when it pertains to the nonhuman existence and evolutionary growth of life, but for the human species, he is totally circumferential.  The concept of natural selection, that being the gradual elimination of undesirable traits over time which eliminates inferior species and behaviors has not shown any viability when considering the human population and its continued embrace of ignorance and intolerance. A lack of understanding and total lack of enlightenment combined with an unwillingness to recognize and respect differences in opinions or beliefs of others will never change, as we all can acknowledge from the constant barrage of social media .

The best that can be said is that though we do have the capability of advancing those secular elements of our existence in the fields of medicine, technology and science, the human population has not advanced itself beyond its penchant for the destruction of others and by applying the history of human ignorance going back thousands of years, chances are, we will never develop beyond the stage of cave dwellers.  Neanderthal man continues to survive and prosper in today’s world.
Knowledge is no guarantee of good behavior, but ignorance is a virtual guarantee of bad behavior….  Martha Nussbaum
Religious wars are not caused by the fact that there is more than one religion, but by the spirit of intolerance… the spread of which can only be regarded as the total eclipse of human reason….Charles de Secondat
