Tonight I went to the mountain and reflected on some of the problems we Americans are now facing, and wondering if there will ever come a time when we will return to the days of decency. Actually, what I did was to drive up onto the valley rim of the Missouri River and looked down onto the sparkling reflection of moving water. As I sat, I wondered why we forget those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, why we have forgotten that we are a united nation and that we need to return to the ideals of honor and pride. I do understand that there are many troubles facing us, and I lay those problems, not only at the feet of an ineffectual federal government, special interest groups whose narrow minded philosophies negate all else, I also lay it at the feet of the citizens who believe that if they do not become involved, then the problems will disappear. You know the type, those who bury their heads in the sand.
I wonder at the mind set of those Americans who defile our country’s flag, those who bring legal action against Christianity, those who place money before what is right and decent, and those whose apathy perpetuates a continuing lack of direction. I sat and wondered how those people could dance in American streets when 9-11 occurred and when a United States public school can fly the Mexican flag instead of our own flag, when people spit on those soldiers returning from war, and when a few greedy individuals almost destroyed the economy of this country and gained from this act. I also wondered where and how we lost our justice.
I have many questions and few answers. But one of my answers lays in the lyrics of a favorite song.
Grandpappy told my pappy, back in my day, son
A man had to answer for the wicked that he done
Take all the rope in Texas
Find a tall oak tree, round up all of them bad boys
Hang them high in the street for all the people to see.
Toby Keith and Willy Nelson: Beer for my horses.
